TALES OF THE COCKTAIL® ANNOUNCES TOP FOUR FINALISTS FOR THE 8TH ANNUAL SPIRITED AWARDS®

Coming to you from a webcam in an apartment in NYC Simon Ford and Jacob Briars initiated the inaugural broadcast of the top four finalists in each category of the 2014 Spirited Awards. As Ford notes, “Millions tune in for the Oscars, and we are going the same route for bars. There are more bartenders than actors [out there].”

And speaking of more…Briars explains, “This was the biggest and most comprehensive Tales Awards nominations pool ever.” With over 2,000 individual nominations and over 50 countries being represented with at least one nominee, the 135 judges were hard pressed to whittle it down to a list of four per category. Let’s see who we’ll be cheering on Saturday night at Tales during the Black and White themed 8th Annual Spirited Awards® show (although you know you’re all winners).

LADIES WHO LUNCH

1st Annual Dame Hall of Fame Luncheon is on July 18th

Follow the hats on July 18th and you’ll notice that the ladies are at it again – celebrating their past accomplishments and looking towards an even brighter future that will be revealed at this year’s Dame Hall of Fame luncheon at Tales of the Cocktail 2013 (www.talesofthecocktail.com). This the day for some serious celebrating of the strides women have made in the spirits industry, and all are welcome at this celebratory luncheon held at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel (www.omnihotels.com/FindAHotel/neworleansroyalorleans).

Returning sponsor Hollis Bulleit, World Ambassador for Bulleit Bourbon & Rye, explains why she and her brand are coming back for the sophomore year of this event that is co-sponsored by LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails), “The Dame Hall of Fame means to me that I get to celebrate with my peers the breaking of another glass ceiling. It is a place for me to be proud of my accomplishments and taking the risk to add a feminine perspective and queer perspective in an industry that up until quite recently had a lot of rules on the right way to enjoy brown spirits.”

Having women lead the way on the right way to enjoy brown spirits, and spirits of every hue, is a far cry from the days when when women weren’t even allowed in bars. Now they’re shaking up the entire industry as mixologists, bar owners, ambassadors and more. It wouldn’t be possible without the ongoing dialogue and mentorship that LUPEC engenders throughout the year and, since LUPEC events are not simply brand commercials, that is why organizers decided to add an engaging educational component to this year’s luncheon via a Q&A session that will foster spirited conversation. LUPEC NYC President Lynnette Marrero notes, “It is important for LUPEC events at Tales of the Cocktail to be a chance for brands to interact with our members and to share their unique brand stories with our fan base.”

A SHOT OF THE BLACK STUFF

Maybe those college kids doing shots of Jägermeister aren’t so stupid after all

They might actually be onto something (though possibly going about it in the wrong way) – and that something is appreciating the restorative qualities that Amaros and bitters like Averna (www.avernausa.com), Jägermeister, Fernet (www.fernetbranca.com), and Underberg (www.underberg.com) all offer.

We have all downed these bitter drinks in a hurry, rushing to get it to our belly, hoping it will do some good…or maybe bad. But, after sitting through the recent Tales of the Cocktail (www.talesofthecocktail.com) seminar A Shot of Black Stuff – Amazing Amaros and Brilliant Bitters, to see if these traditional medicinal bitters had any positive pharmaceutical value, I think I’ve concluded that the answer is “yes.”

The traditional boundaries of Tales of the Cocktail seminars were stretched for the first time this year as due to the ever-growing popularity of the event it had to expand outside the confines of the Hotel Monteleone (www.hotelmonteleone.com). Just one block away, the ballrooms of the Royal Sonesta Hotel (www.sonesta.com/royalneworleans/) on Bourbon Street were put to good use for an overflow of cocktail geekery and knowledge gathering. The ballrooms at the Royal Sonesta were refreshingly easy to find, compared to the labyrinth of the Monteleone, and sitting in the coffee shop across the hall I found two Germans waiting for the seminar to start.

Introducing the first ever Louis 649 ANYONE CAN BE A MIXOLOGIST Consumer Cocktail Competition

“Anyone can cook!” said Remy and Chef Gusteau in Ratatouille.

While we don’t welcome rats behind our bar, we do welcome our guests since we believe at Louis 649 (www.louis649.com) that, “Anyone can be a mixologist!” And we’re letting you put this theory to the test in our first ever Louis 649 Consumer Cocktail competition.

This is your chance to shine. Anyone and everyone who sits on the other side of the bar is encouraged to tap into their little bar chef within and submit a delicious cocktail recipe. Bartenders need not apply; this contest is strictly for you loyal bar patrons.

It is of course a competition, and with all competitions come a prize! The winning cocktail of Louis 649’s first “Anyone Can Be A Mixologist” Consumer Cocktail Competition will be highlighted on our upcoming Spring Menu and credited to you. The winner will also receive a much coveted Plymouth Gin Bartending Kit (www.plymouthgin.com), a 1-Year Subscription to Imbibe Magazine (www.imbibemagazine.com) and a $100 Gift Card to your friendly neighborhood Louis 649.

Recipe Submission Guidelines:
1) Submission DEADLINE is April 18th

3) With submission, please include a detailed recipe with measurements, the type of glass to be used, whether the drink should be served “up” or over ice, whether it is meant to be stirred or shaken, your full name, email address, phone number, current city, and your occupation.
4) Be creative, but not over the top. Please remember, we have to make this cocktail all Spring.
