INSIDERS drink for less at Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company thanks to NYC bartender Jason Littrell
There are things about living in the BOS-WAS corridor that are great, like being able to nip up and down the coast for relatively little money and effort. And then there are things about living in the BOS-WAS corridor that are even greater…like when bartenders show up in town to shake behind a fellow barman’s bar, and you benefit.
Tonight, from 8-10, it’s magic hour. Jason Littrell (Death & Company, Dram) is heading to Philly to spend a few hours mixing up libations with his pal Nick Jarrett at Franklin Mortgage & Investment Company www.thefranklinbar.com at 112 S. 18th Street, Philadelphia and he hopes you’ll come in to say hello.
Of course you’ll get more than just a friendly greeting and a delectable drink in return; mention INSIDE F&B www.insidefandb.com to any bartender when you order a Daiquiri or an Old Fashioned and your drink is 25% off (that’s just $9).
Bottoms up!

Story and Photos by Joe DiStefano

Tools of the Trade
“The Bar Loves the Kitchen” seminars recently held at the International Food & Restaurant Show (www.internationalrestaurantny.com) brought together top mixologists, bartenders, and industry experts to discuss a simple yet powerful idea: a closer relationship between the bar and the kitchen leads to cost savings and more efficient sourcing strategies all while enhancing the guest experience.

Jason Littrell Muddles It Up A Bit
“The concept behind bar loves the kitchen is really about crossover between what happens in the kitchen and the back of the house and what happens in the front of the house and the bar,” said Francine Cohen, Editor in Chief of INSIDE F&B (www.insidefandb.com), who designed and hosted the seminars. “A lot of restaurants don’t take advantage of what’s happening back in their kitchen, they don’t think about how items like oranges and lemons can be ordered just once and used in both arenas.

Whose punch will we find in our cups?
By Francine Cohen
Whose Tiki tipple will be raised in a toast as the official cocktail for Tales of the Cocktail 2010 and lauded by cocktail professionals and aficionados far and wide?

You’ll have to wait until March 31st to find out what you’ll surely be sipping at Tales, but for now we can tell you that there are ten finalists, and it’s a very impressive lineup of Tiki mixing talent.
These talented mixing whizzes were offered a chance to create the official cocktail for the summer’s most spirited event thanks to Tales of the Cocktail’s partnership with Culinary Concierge Magazine www.culinaryconcierge.com, Tasting Panel Magazine www.tastingpanelmag.com, and CocktailTimes.com www.cocktailtimes.com. With over 150 recipes submitted judges Jeff Berry, Anthony Dias-Blue, Robert Hess and Stephen Remsberg had quite a task selecting the ten finalists.
Author and Tiki expert Jeff Berry comments, “Sampling from over 150 of these creative, complex, forward-thinking, often delicious ‘Tikified’ Planter’s Punches was pure pleasure,

February 25, 2010 will forever live in infamy as the day that the beloved pickle back jumped the shark.
We’re thrilled for its popularity. And still intend to enjoy them now and again. But the pickle back no longer holds its own as a secret insider liquid handshake since the cat’s out of the bag thanks to this terrific article by Robert Haynes-Peterson, http://www.examiner.com/x-2969-NY-Drinks-Examiner~y2010m2d25-The-Breslin-Brings-Pickle-Back
Known well to those who have embraced the briiiiiiine, the pickle back has a special place in the hearts of industry folks (and a select and welcome group of aficionados) who find themselves at bars late into the night/wee hours of the morning, often following a grueling shift and looking for nothing more than a simple drink, a savory pick me up, and some good company. Now we expect to see lots of people bellying up to the bar for their backs.
Whatever its vaunted origins (Texas www.traveltex.com, Bushwick Country Club www.bushwickcountryclub.com, The Randolph www.randolphnyc.com, The Rusty Knot www.nymag.com/listings/bar/rusty-knot/ ) and supposed instigators of its popular appeal
